WHAT CAN I DO?
Thankfully, as an individual, there is an endless list of actions you can take to help save sharks. No matter what age or part of the world you live in, I guarantee, you will find some way to do your part.
1) For starters, DO NOT EAT SHARK FIN SOUP! If you can stop a couple of people from consuming the soup, then you should be very proud. You just saved a shark! But why stop there? If you know of a restaurant that is selling various edible shark fin products, then perhaps you could politely talk to a manager or owner. Many food chains which serve the soups, are actually unaware of what goes on in the process of exporting shark fins. If marching into a restaurant with a prepared speech isn't something for you, then writing a formal letter/email or picking up the phone is just as good!
2) Tell a friend everything you know! This works as a chain effect. Your friend is most likely too tell someone else about the issue, which will only result in even more members of the community becoming aware of the issue!
3) Social networking! These days, everything is passed on through the internet, so adding a banner, posting the occasional status, putting up links, and adding photos will be sure to help pass on the message!
4)Purchasing merchandise. You can buy just about anything online these days, and that includes shark conservation items! All over the internet are companies/retailers who sell items from t-shirts, to backpacks, even guitar picks that have a picture/logo about stopping finning! Visit http://stopsharkfinning.net/store.htm
5) If you are an outgoing person, why not give a speech or presentation? Visit your school, church, community center, youth group, or anywhere else you can think of! Not only is this a fantastic way to share your information with others, but it will show those around you just how easy it can be to get involved!
6) Get crafty! Home-made badges, stickers, key-chains etc, are perfect for a cause like this! Have a go at designing your own logo and perhaps try getting it printed onto a shirt. Making your own posters are also a great thing to do. Visit local businesses, public libraries, schools, community centers and kindly ask if they would be willing to display it in their space!
